Mixing & Mastering

Take your record as far as it can go.

A great mix lets music become everything it is meant to be. Send me your files - or come and finish it at Jardin Acoustique, our 18th-century walled garden in southwest France.

Mix work for labels, agencies, and the artists they sign

The work

Most of what arrives is already great. The work is making you love it more.

By the time a record reaches me, it's the work of people who have been doing this for years. The job is to lift a production, elevate the character of sounds, and create the alchemy when sounds blend and breathe together.

Sometimes that needs a bit of distance. From out here, with fresh ears and the right room, it's the most interesting work I can imagine.

Jardin Acoustique

Imagine finishing your record on holiday in France.

Why not come and finish your record in Duras, Nouvelle-Aquitaine. Jardin Acoustique is the creative retreat Greta and I created: an 18th-century farm estate with walled gardens and a pool. You stay in the 3-bedroom guest house and work next door, in the music room, with me - for as long as your record needs.

The food is good, the wine great, and the evenings long. You'll leave with a finished record and a story about how you made it.

The music room

When I first listened to music in this room, I cried (that does not happen often).

A 60 m² room with high ceilings, natural light, and views across the valley - frequency, phase, and time aligned, optimised with a Trinnov system, so you accurately hear everything in the music.

The result is a record that works across all systems: headphones, club speakers, or a phone. The same quality sound, wherever it is played.

Much of what I mix, I master too. The room is sharp enough that nothing gets second-guessed in the handover.

+ What's in the room
Monitoring: Quested mains, Barefoot and Amphion near-fields, Trinnov room correction, Lynx converters. Tracking: Movable gobos for adaptable acoustics - vocal booth, acoustic ensemble, full band.

About Fred

A life inside music.

It's been a journey: cathedral chorister at seven. Violinist since aged 3. Tour and club DJ sets at Fabric, Glastonbury, Creamfields. First-class honours in music from LIPA. Twenty years recording bands and mixing records: electronic, folk, classical, dance, funk, soul, rock and pop. Credits include Ludovico Einaudi ("In a Time Lapse" special edition). Producing for the opening of European Capital of Culture 2008 with Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra. Producing the anthem for the world's largest trade expo in Shanghai with Sir Paul McCartney. Music for film, television and advertising. Producing G! Festival in the Faroe Islands working with artists like Rag'n'Bone Man, Faithless, Fatboy Slim and Nigel Kennedy. None of which is the point. The point is that the next record is the interesting one: yours, and what it will take to get it sounding the way it should.

I care even more….

It was lovely to read this, but it also got me thinking. You know, when someone trusts you with their music, and their art, it’s a great honour. It’s also a massive responsibility. An artist has every right to do whatever they want with their music – their only responsibility is to make it, not […]

Isobelle Austin “Sun on my Skin”

Sometimes the timing of things feels significant. Today, 17.07.26, Isobelle releases her first piece. It holds personal weight, as it coincided with one of the most difficult periods of my life, when over the course of fifteen months I was my mum’s primary carer through terminal cancer. I met Isobelle at the beginning of this […]
